Dialing in Your Ride: Traction Pad Setup with Active Water Sports

So, you just got your new Soulcraft board—congrats! Now, let’s talk about setting it up right so you can lock in your stance and send it with confidence. Installing traction pads is a simple peel-and-stick process, but getting it right makes all the difference. It’s all about dialing in the perfect stance width while keeping some room to shift your feet as you carve and boost off the wake. Our friends at Active Water Sports in Oregon put together a quick video walkthrough to help you get it just right—check it out at the link below!

Why Traction Setup Matters

A solid traction pad setup keeps you locked in, comfortable, and in control. If the pads aren’t placed properly or don’t stick well, they can shift or peel—messing with both performance and longevity. Follow these steps to get it right the first time and keep your board dialed in for the long haul.

Step-by-Step Traction Pad Installation

1. Prep the Surface

Clean your board where the pads will go—dust, wax, and oils can mess with the adhesive. If needed, use isopropyl alcohol to remove any stubborn residue and make sure the pads bond strong.

2. Plan Your Layout

Before peeling the backing, place the pads on your board to test out different placements. Consider your stance and foot positioning to get the best balance and control.

  • Most surfers go for 8”-11” between the front and back pad.
  • Average riders (5’10” or so) tend to like 10”-11” of spacing.
  • Shorter riders? Keep it a little tighter.
  • Taller riders? Open it up a bit.

A great trick—place the board on the floor (without fins) and stand next to it in your natural surf stance. This will help you visualize the perfect foot placement.

3. Mark the Spot

Once you’ve found the sweet spot, mark the pad outlines with a pencil or masking tape.

  • Got big feet? Leave some gaps between the sections for extra coverage.
  • Smaller feet? You can place the pads snug together.
  • A ¼” - ” gap between pad sections works well for most riders.

4. Stick ‘Em On

Peel the backing and carefully place the pads inside your marked outlines. Press down firmly, smoothing out any air bubbles. Make sure the edges are sealed tight—this prevents water from sneaking under and messing with the adhesive.

5. Let It Cure

Once all pads are in place, press down over the entire surface to ensure a strong bond. Let the adhesive fully cure before taking your board out for a session (check the manufacturer’s recommendations for exact timeframes).
